Welcome to
Throughout the school year,
if you have classroom concerns or ideas, please speak with the classroom
teacher. If there is a building or
general school issue, I am available to speak with you!
Please read carefully the information provided in this
booklet and sign and return the signature page to school with your child on the
first day of school or at the orientation night.
Reminders and notices:
*School starts at
*Our cafeteria will be
utilizing a computerized system for lunch and breakfast services, including
financial record-keeping. Students can
pay in advance for their meals as money collected is posted as a credit on the
student account. Students can only
accumulate three charges for a regular tray.
You are STRONGLY encouraged to pay for lunches and breakfasts by the
week or the month so that the accounting system is more efficient for students
and our staff.
*If you know in advance that
your child is going to be absent from school and you would like to request
school work, please notify the teacher at least 3 days prior to the
absence. If your child is absent from school due to an illness,
we ask that you not request school work unless your child will be absent for
more than two days. When your child
is sick, he/she should rest rather than focus on school work. We understand that you may want your child to
complete some school work so that he/she does not fall behind, however, this
should not be necessary unless the absence is for an extended time (3 days or
more).
*In cases where students have
5 or more unexcused absence (excused is doctor’s absence or immediate death in
family), the parent/guardian will receive a notice from the principal in effort
to prevent further attendance problems.
*School fee payments should
be made immediately. If you cannot afford to pay the entire fee amount in advance,
please arrange a payment plan with our secretary.
K $25
(plus $31 milk snack fee)
1-3 $45
4-6 $30
7-8 $35
Best wishes for a pleasant
and successful school year!
Sincerely,
Shirley L. Cox, Principal
Students
in grades kindergarten through three may be assigned nightly homework. Primary teachers review the homework to
determine if students are mastering grade level skills and concepts, but for students
in grades kindergarten through three, homework has minimal, if any, impact on
grades. However, students may receive
consequences (loss of recess minutes) for failing to complete this work on time.
In
grades four through eight, homework is assigned regularly and does impact the
grade. Compared to major assignments
such as quizzes, tests, written essays, science labs, and projects, homework is
a minimal part of the grade. There are
major assignments which are considered classwork that do require some work at
home – these major assignments are not handled as daily homework assignments
worth minimal points.
Please
note that our teaching team will meet with parents to devise a specific
homework intervention plan for any student who repeatedly fails to do homework
and/or classwork. In addition, in cases
where a student fails to complete a major project that may require work at
home, special consequences may be assigned to the student by the teacher and/or
principal in an attempt to get the student to successfully complete the work
for partial credit.
Grades 4-6:

Warren Elementary School-Wide Behavior
Program
The 2008-2009 school year
marks the second year of a school-wide behavior management program at Warren
Elementary that is designed to prevent behavior programs and reward students
for good behavior.
All of our staff has been
trained in specific strategies to prevent behavior problems, and each teacher
will have positive rewards for individual and small groups of students who meet
the behavior expectations. The principal
will also reward groups of students and individual children for good behavior.
The staff has set four
school-wide rules in addition to the policies and procedures outlined in the
student handbook:
*Follow directions the first
time.
*Come to class prepared.
*No put-downs, bullying,
disrespect or manipulations.
*Hands, feet, and belongings
to self.
When students violate these
rules, the following occurs:
First offense Level 1 Warning
Second offense Level
2 Time-out or last-out of class during
class change
Third offense Level 3 Lonely lunch
Fourth offense Level 4 Parent telephone call
Fifth offense Level 5 Removal to buddy room for 20 min. and write
essay
*any further misbehavior is
referral to the office
For severe behaviors
(fighting, vandalism, overt defiance, stopping the class from functioning,
stealing, drug or alcohol violation, sexual harassment), the student is sent
directly to the office.
When an incident occurs on
the playground, cafeteria, bathroom, or during a transition time (example
hallway), the mischievous behavior is recorded in the office accountability
book instead of using the five levels.
If a student is referred to the accountability book five times in a nine
week period, he/she receives an office referral.
Please understand that with
this program office referrals result in significant consequences because our
staff members have already made five intervention attempts prior or the behavior
is severe. Furthermore, the first
time a student is assigned three or more lonely lunches in a one week period,
he/she will be assigned an after-school detention for repeated behavior
problems. Thereafter, three or more
lonely lunches in a one week period will result in
Notice for 2008-2009: Because in the
past three years there have been problems with gum on hallway and classroom
floors and gum stuck on water fountains and various classroom furniture,
students will NOT be permitted to chew gum during the school day. In accordance with school board policy,
students are NOT permitted to use or possess electronic devices during the
school day, which includes cell phones, MP3 players, and iPODS.
To establish consistent
behavior expectations,
Level 1 Warning
Level 2 Moved to another seat that day
Level 3 Parent contact
Level 4 Bus referral to the principal
Severe bus behavior incidents
such as fighting, overt defiance, and throwing objects out bus windows, result
in an automatic bus referral to the principal.
All disciplinary actions are at the discretion of the building
principal.
*We ask that parents please purchase only the SPECIFIC
items listed. Students do not need
anything else unless later communicated by the teacher. All students will need a backpack without
wheels and not oversized, and a pair of gym shoes to remain at school. It is recommended that you write the
student’s name in permanent marker on all items.
