August 2008

Dear Warren Elementary School Parent/Guardian:

Welcome to Warren Elementary School and the 2008-2009 school year!  We hope returning students enjoy another challenging but enjoying school year here at Warren and we wish our new students a wonderful educational experience!  Our school is very proud of the rigorous academic curriculum we offer our students.  For the past two years, our school has been rated by the Ohio Department of Education as “Effective.”  There are many special programs and activities that our students can choose to be involved with, and there are opportunities for enrichment and extra help for students who might need more than the general curriculum has to offer.

Throughout the school year, if you have classroom concerns or ideas, please speak with the classroom teacher.  If there is a building or general school issue, I am available to speak with you!

Please read carefully the information provided in this booklet and sign and return the signature page to school with your child on the first day of school or at the orientation night.

Reminders and notices:

*School starts at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m.  Please contact the school office by 10:00 a.m. to report the reason for a student absence and provide the office a copy of any doctor’s excuse when the child returns to school.

*Our cafeteria will be utilizing a computerized system for lunch and breakfast services, including financial record-keeping.  Students can pay in advance for their meals as money collected is posted as a credit on the student account.  Students can only accumulate three charges for a regular tray.  You are STRONGLY encouraged to pay for lunches and breakfasts by the week or the month so that the accounting system is more efficient for students and our staff.

*If you know in advance that your child is going to be absent from school and you would like to request school work, please notify the teacher at least 3 days prior to the absence.  If  your child is absent from school due to an illness, we ask that you not request school work unless your child will be absent for more than two days.  When your child is sick, he/she should rest rather than focus on school work.  We understand that you may want your child to complete some school work so that he/she does not fall behind, however, this should not be necessary unless the absence is for an extended time (3 days or more).

*In cases where students have 5 or more unexcused absence (excused is doctor’s absence or immediate death in family), the parent/guardian will receive a notice from the principal in effort to prevent further attendance problems.

*School fee payments should be made immediately. If you cannot afford to pay the entire fee amount in advance, please arrange a payment plan with our secretary.

                K             $25 (plus $31 milk snack fee)

                1-3           $45

                4-6           $30

                7-8           $35

Best wishes for a pleasant and successful school year!

Sincerely,

Shirley L. Cox, Principal

Warren Elementary School

Warren Elementary School Homework Philosophy and Policies 2008-2009

Students in grades kindergarten through three may be assigned nightly homework.  Primary teachers review the homework to determine if students are mastering grade level skills and concepts, but for students in grades kindergarten through three, homework has minimal, if any, impact on grades.  However, students may receive consequences (loss of recess minutes) for failing to complete this work on time.

In grades four through eight, homework is assigned regularly and does impact the grade.  Compared to major assignments such as quizzes, tests, written essays, science labs, and projects, homework is a minimal part of the grade.  There are major assignments which are considered classwork that do require some work at home – these major assignments are not handled as daily homework assignments worth minimal points.

Please note that our teaching team will meet with parents to devise a specific homework intervention plan for any student who repeatedly fails to do homework and/or classwork.  In addition, in cases where a student fails to complete a major project that may require work at home, special consequences may be assigned to the student by the teacher and/or principal in an attempt to get the student to successfully complete the work for partial credit.

Grades 4-6:

CREDIT:

Students should write daily assignments in school planner.

Assignments are posted in the classroom.

Homework that is one day late receives half credit.

Homework that is more than one day late receives a zero.

COMMUNICATION:

Three or more missing assignments results in a telephone call or written communication to the parent.

CONSEQUENCE:

Possible loss of recess minutes to complete unfinished work.

Five or more missing assignments may result in a referral to the principal for a possible Saturday School, after-school detention, and/or homework card.

Grades 7-8:

CREDIT:

Students should write daily assignments in school planner.

Assignments are posted in the classroom.

Homework that is one day late receives half credit.

Homework that is more than one day late receives a zero.

Major projects, which may require work at home, receive half credit if submitted one day late.  10% additional grade deduction will occur after the first day late.

COMMUNICATION:

Three or more missing assignments results in the teacher or student calling the parent.

CONSEQUENCE:

Possible loss of recess minutes to complete unfinished work.

Five or more missing assignments result in a referral to the principal for a possible Saturday School, after-school detention, and/or homework card.

*Attention 8th grade parents:  At the end of the 8th grade year, a promotion ceremony is held for 8th grade students who have met the grade level expectations for promotion (passed 4 out of 5 academic subject areas) and whose student fee accounts have been paid.  A student’s final grades are impacted by each nine week grade – please be aware of this promotion privilege and encourage your child to maintain passing marks all year so that he/she can participate in promotion.

Warren Elementary School Extra Help and Intervention

Warren Elementary School students are expected to complete a challenging curriculum, and our teachers have developed a plan for the year that identifies the skills and content to be taught to students.  For grades 4-8, each teacher has developed a syllabus listing the specific grading procedures and expectations for the class.  Please

visit our school website at  http://www.warrenlocal.k12.oh.us/warrene  to review the documents.  If you do not have access to the internet at home, you can arrange to use a computer at our school.

We realize that some students may need extra support to reach Warren Elementary School’s expectations.  Our school offers numerous sources of extra help for its students, including special education services for students identified as having a disability.

If your child continues to struggle in school, please contact the school office to arrange an Intervention Assistance Team meeting so that we can develop specific strategies to help your child succeed at Warren Elementary School.  We do have a homework hotline that you can call in order to confirm daily homework assignments.  The telephone contact numbers are 373-4937 ext. 1 for grades K-2, ext. 2 grades 3-4, ext. 3 grades 5-6, and ext. 4 grades 7-8.

Grades K-4:

Because early intervention is critical for success, Warren Elementary School provides intervention services for reading and language arts for 35 to 40 minutes each day in every kindergarten through third grade class section.  For grades 4-8, a homework center is available everyday from 7:45 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. where students can receive help for their homework.

Grades 5-8:

There are limited before and/or after-school tutorial sessions offered to students in grades 5-8, specifically math and literacy, and information about these programs will be sent home at a later date.  In addition to this homework help, students in grades 5 through 8 will have the opportunity to participate in an intervention time each day.  For grades 4-8, a homework center is also available everyday from 7:45 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. where students can receive help for their homework.

Social Issues:

Warren Elementary School provides character education lessons on a monthly basis to grades first through four.  We will have a school-wide emphasis on character traits and school respect and pride through special programs that our staff has planned this year.  If your child needs to speak our guidance counselor about a particular social or school issue, please contact the guidance counselor at 373-4937.

Warren Elementary School-Wide Behavior Program

The 2008-2009 school year marks the second year of a school-wide behavior management program at Warren Elementary that is designed to prevent behavior programs and reward students for good behavior.

All of our staff has been trained in specific strategies to prevent behavior problems, and each teacher will have positive rewards for individual and small groups of students who meet the behavior expectations.  The principal will also reward groups of students and individual children for good behavior.

The staff has set four school-wide rules in addition to the policies and procedures outlined in the student handbook:

*Follow directions the first time.

*Come to class prepared.

*No put-downs, bullying, disrespect or manipulations.

*Hands, feet, and belongings to self.

When students violate these rules, the following occurs:

First offense                          Level 1   Warning

Second offense                    Level 2   Time-out or last-out of class during class change

Third offense                        Level 3   Lonely lunch

Fourth offense                      Level 4   Parent telephone call

Fifth offense                         Level 5   Removal to buddy room for 20 min. and write essay

*any further misbehavior is referral to the office

For severe behaviors (fighting, vandalism, overt defiance, stopping the class from functioning, stealing, drug or alcohol violation, sexual harassment), the student is sent directly to the office.

When an incident occurs on the playground, cafeteria, bathroom, or during a transition time (example hallway), the mischievous behavior is recorded in the office accountability book instead of using the five levels.  If a student is referred to the accountability book five times in a nine week period, he/she receives an office referral.

Please understand that with this program office referrals result in significant consequences because our staff members have already made five intervention attempts prior or the behavior is severe.  Furthermore, the first time a student is assigned three or more lonely lunches in a one week period, he/she will be assigned an after-school detention for repeated behavior problems.  Thereafter, three or more lonely lunches in a one week period will result in Saturday School or in-school suspension.  Any student who refuses to comply to lonely lunch procedures will automatically be assigned an after-school detention and/or Saturday School.

Notice for 2008-2009:  Because in the past three years there have been problems with gum on hallway and classroom floors and gum stuck on water fountains and various classroom furniture, students will NOT be permitted to chew gum during the school day.  In accordance with school board policy, students are NOT permitted to use or possess electronic devices during the school day, which includes cell phones, MP3 players, and iPODS.

To establish consistent behavior expectations, Warren Local School District bus drivers will also be following a similar discipline plan with the rules the same as the classroom (with the exception of come to class prepared).  The consequences for mischievous behaviors on the bus are:

Level 1   Warning

Level 2   Moved to another seat that day

Level 3   Parent contact

Level 4   Bus referral to the principal

Severe bus behavior incidents such as fighting, overt defiance, and throwing objects out bus windows, result in an automatic bus referral to the principal.  All disciplinary actions are at the discretion of the building principal.
