Parent Mentor:  Tammy Hanger

Definition:  A Parent Mentor is the parent of a child with a disability employed to help school districts and families by providing support, information, and training services.

The Parent Mentor Program:

bullet

serves parents of children with disabilities or suspected disabilities from ages 3-21 in all schools in Washington County, Ohio

bullet

is designed to provide information and support to families of children with disabilities

bullet

serves as a liaison between families and school district personnel to foster positive teamwork between parents and professionals

bullet

is a free service

Support and Services:

bullet

Guide parents through the special education process.

bullet

Listen and answer questions on a one-on-one basis.

bullet

Assist parents in becoming more involved in their child's education by providing the support and information parents need.

bullet

Act as a liaison between parents and schools when problems arise.

bullet

Supply information about special education programs offered in Washington County.

bullet

Link parents and teachers to support groups, other parents and community resources.

bullet

Help develop effective Individual Education Plans ( IEP), and attend team meetings as needed.

Reasons to Call The Parent Mentor:

I feel alone and wish I could talk to another parent who understands my concerns.

I have many questions about my child's education but forgot to ask them at the school meetings.

bullet

I would like to be more involved in planning my child's education.

bullet

I am worried about my child's progress and don't know what to do.

bullet

I feel like nobody is listening to my concerns about my child.

bullet

I would like to have someone attend and support me at IEP and/or other meetings at school.

About Me:

I am employed through the Ohio Valley Educational Service Center.

bullet

The program is funded by a grant from the state of Ohio's Department of Education.

bullet

I serve all the school districts in Washington County, Ohio.

bullet

I have three sons, two of them have disabilities.  The other son is a cancer survivor of 12 years.
